As 102- millimeters underfoot with progressive tip rocker, the Navis Freebird can handle just about any type of snow condition. Sure, it's not as wide as a dedicated powder ski, and not as grippy on ice as a narrower, stiffer ski, but it has a very balanced combination of performance characteristics. Black Crows uses a blended core of poplar and paulownia wood. Poplar provides energy and responsiveness, while paulownia keeps the weight to a minimum (Just 3400 grams per pair at the 179 –centimeter length). Fiberglass is combined with carbon fiber to provide more energy, responsiveness, and stability. The progressive tail shape gives the ski less washout and easier pivoting turn initiation. Black Crows also adds a layer of titanal underfoot for binding retention, and adds to performance as well, giving the ski a little more stability underfoot. For ski tourers, it’s a great expedition or long day spring ski. Stable, playful, and stands nicely under pressure. The Navis Freebird is specifically designed for those long days and long expeditions. It's a perfect application for the ski, but if you're like most of us and just don't have the time or opportunity for that many extended backcountry touring trips, it works really well for day trips or pre-work skin laps too. Those skis must totally and completely excel in one particular area as a result, and the K2 244 skis are a prime example of this. Built exclusively for competitive or obsessive mogul skiers, these straight sticks are a throwback to the skis of the mid-90's. It’s funny, though, how race skis have undergone a series of changes over the years, and have incorporated and altered different shaping techniques to maximize their efficiency in a race course, while mogul skis have stayed relatively the same. My big beef is that they’re just not long enough for bigger skiers, topping out at 173, but that’s mostly the case with competition bump skis these days. Nothin’ like my old 203’s (which I still have, btw)! At any rate, another one of the changes is that they use denser wood and more fiberglass to add more heft to the ski, so that 173 does ski and feel longer. Since they’re built to absolutely demolish tight zipper lines and land huge airs at almost 30 mph, they do have to have a more robust build, and K2 nails it. At 66 mm underfoot, they’re also a bit wider than my old skis (there I go again down memory lane), and while this makes for a bit less quickness, when it’s combined with the shorter lengths, it makes more sense. Bumpers and zipper line aficionados will love the K2 244 mogul skis.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0670/5135/6456/files/2025-k2-244-skis-s200305101-s200305101.jpg?v=1774449279
2025-black-crows-camox-freebird-skis-101752
2026 Black Crows Camox Freebird Skis

The 2026 Black Crows Camox Freebird is a versatile touring ski with trustworthy and responsive performance no matter what you may encounter. Paulownia is not a dense wood so there is a good deal of suppleness to it but there certainly is a surprising amount of stiffness, both in a longitudinal sense and a torsional sense. Reinforcing the paulownia, the Camox Freebird also gets Fiberglass and Carbon Fiber stringers to boost the stiffness and energy of the ski without adding a lot of overall weight. A titanal laminate is also placed underfoot to reinforce the binding mount so that you do not lose a binding while deep in the backcountry. The laser SX loves mid radius to sweeping long turns at high speeds just as much as it does casually cruising. Turtle Shell technology makes all of this possible. Wave-shaped slits in the Aluminum make the ski comfortable and maneuverable at slower tempos. The higher the speeds and bigger the edge angle, the more the aluminum interlocks, which lends incredible stability and smoothness to its on-snow feel. Going full out at mach speeds or going just cruising, all of this is no problem with this personal companion by your side. With that being said, These SX's are a fantastic choice for front side skiers looking for that narrow-waisted GS carver that has some all-mountain capabilities as well. The most impressive thing about these Laser skis is that the skier is able to access the full performance of the sidecut, mainly because they're just not too stiff. A dual-metal laminate is made from thinner metal, and that goes well with the lighter wood core in making the SX an agile and nimble carver, but with that top-end of stability and power. The metal does a great job of damping the vibrations, and the light weight of the wood takes care of the energy. Blizzard utilizes wood, carbon, and Titanal for a perfectly balanced flex along the length of the ski to ensure power and stability where you need it, and versatility and playfulness when you want it. As the narrowest of the Black Pearls, the 84 plays best on piste, but with a tapered tip and tail, all-condition rocker profile, and added camber underfoot, you’ve got a capable ski that can handle just about anything you throw at it.

Why we like it:

Building on the success of the previous version, Blizzard has made a few much-appreciated tweaks that really make this ski an appealing option for skiers across a broad range of ability levels.

Who it's for:

The Black Pearl 84 is a fantastic option for intermediate skiers looking to expand upon their skillset. Advanced skiers who prefer a more mellow pace will also get a ton out of the 84 and will enjoy the easy and intuitive feel of this ski.

Highlights:

The intuitive nature of the Black Pearl 84 is a real talking point here. It’s incredibly friendly and easy ski to ski, making it an exceptional choice for intermediates who would benefit from an accessible ski that can grow with them as they progress. We often see intermediate-level skis that lack power and performance once you start to push hard, but the 84 Pearls feel strong and stable, even as they’re put through their paces by a more advanced skier. Blizzard achieves all this by adding Fluxform, a layer of Titanol that provides torsional strength and stiffness to the ski, allowing for greater stability and improved edge grip for a confident and predictable skiing experience.

Things to consider:

There are a lot of choices when it comes to frontside oriented all mountain skis.
