Boot Size

Off-track exploring is what the Rossignol BC X5 was built for. It is a backcountry Nordic boot designed for narrow to mid-width touring skis, with a hinged external cuff and a wide, stable sole that give it real composure once you leave the set track. Warm, supportive, and built to roam, it is the kind of boot that turns a snowed-in trail network into an all-day adventure.

Why we like it:

The hinged external cuff is the feature that defines this boot; it lets the ankle move naturally fore and aft while still delivering the torsional control you need steering through variable snow. We are also fans of the thermo-moldable liner, which heat-molds to your foot for a genuinely custom fit.

Who it's for:

Adventurous recreational skiers who spend more time off the groomed track than on it. It suits skiers heading out on rolling, ungroomed terrain who want warmth, stability, and a boot that can handle a wider ski underfoot. Ability-wise it lands with confident beginners through solid intermediates exploring the backcountry.

Highlights:

The BC X5 rides on a wide Rottefella Nordic BC sole, the wider and beefier backcountry standard; it is not interchangeable with regular NNN bindings, so pair it with a BC NNN setup. The Mobile Cuff is a hinged external design that balances fore and aft freedom with torsional rigidity for control on uneven snow. Inside, a thermo-adjustable liner heat-molds to your foot, and 3M Thinsulate insulation keeps things warm in damp, cold conditions. A waterproof zipper makes entry easy and a Cordura lace cover seals out moisture. Listed weight is 1580 at size 43.

Things to consider:

The fit runs a touch generous through the heel; some skiers find they need to work at the lacing to lock the heel down, so a careful in-store fitting matters here. It is also a stiff boot out of the box, which is appropriate for backcountry support but takes a few outings to fully break in.

Fit & sizing considerations:

The BC X5 sizes true to length, so stick with what you usually ride. If you ski in thick winter socks or want extra room for circulation on cold all-day tours, going up a half size is the move. Because the heel can run roomy, a fitting session is worth the investment to get the hold dialed.
