The refined 2026 Stockli Montero AX is an all-mountain frontside ski that promises versatility and utmost carving performance. Quick to turn and smooth as can be, the Montero AX grips, energizes, and propels you down the fall line with precision and supreme quality. The AX is ideal for railing mid-radius turns down your favorite groomer and then mixing in some ungroomed terrain for some added spice.
Why we like it:
The smoothness and composure that comes with its energy is something only rivaled by its sibling, the Montero AR.
Who it's for:
Advanced to expert skiers who spend most of their time carving turns on the frontside of the resort with some of their time spent off-piste.
Highlights:
The Montero AX uses a light poplar and beech wood core to provide energy and stability while keeping the weight low for maneuverability. Sandwiching the wood core are two titanal laminates which dampen vibrations and provide torsional stiffness. The changes made to the 2026 model are that two small windows are removed from the laminates in the tips and tails to reduce the swing weight and allow slightly more suppleness to the tips of the ski for easier turn initiation. Solid Metal Edge Light edges are used which are thinker than conventional edges but have insert less deeply than conventional edge to decrease overall weight. Adaptive Contact Length and Full Contact Edge places the widest part of the ski further into the tips so that when the ski is on edge, the effective edge of the ski lengthens and provides more grip. An all-mountain rocker profile gives the AX slight tip and tail rocker for maneuverability and agility anywhere on the mountain.
Things to consider:
The Montero AX distinguishes itself from the Montero AR in that it has a tighter turn radius and has a narrower waist width. We have found that the AX has a more turny character and likes to sit in the mid to upper speeds while the AR likes to go faster and make wider, longer, arcing turns. Another thing to consider is that the AX has a mount point that is a good deal further back towards the tails which requires the skier to have proper technique due to the necessity of driving the tips of the skis.
Fit & sizing considerations:
Skis true to size.
