Kids who would rather slash side hits and chase powder than run gates get a ski with real freeride roots in the Atomic Bent Chetler Mini. This junior take on Atomic's playful freeride ski pairs a lightweight wood core with a light synthetic core material, a durable capped sidewall, and a rockered tip and tail with camber underfoot. The result is a ski that floats easily, pivots on command and still holds enough edge to carve back to the lift.
Why we like it:
Atomic gave the Mini its Resist Edge Park, a tougher edge built to shrug off rocks, rails and the general abuse adventurous kids dish out. The Powder Rocker profile also makes soft snow feel easy for a lighter skier, and that's usually when kids fall in love with skiing off the trail.
Who it's for:
This ski is for older kids and young teens who are comfortable all over the mountain and want to explore powder, trees and the terrain park. It's a great next step for juniors outgrowing their first carving skis who are drawn to a freestyle, freeride style of skiing.
Highlights:
Powder Rocker is the foundation, with 20 percent tip rocker, 65 percent camber and 15 percent tail rocker, so the ski planes up quickly in soft snow while keeping enough camber to grip on firm days. The 163 cm measures 124.4 mm at the tip, 94 mm underfoot and 114.2 mm at the tail with an 18 m radius, and the 153 cm tightens up to a 14 m radius for quicker turns. Atomic pairs a Light Woodcore with Densolite, a lightweight synthetic, to keep swing weight low for smaller skiers. A Dura Cap Sidewall adds durability, and the directional shape keeps it tracking predictably in variable snow. The factory tune is an 87° side edge and a 1.3° base edge, a forgiving setup that's easy to steer.
Things to consider:
Atomic positions this size range for skiers roughly 8 to 13 years old, so younger or smaller kids should look at the 133 to 143 Bent Chetler Mini. Its soft-snow bias also makes it less of a dedicated carver than the Redster or Maverick junior skis in the line.
Fit & sizing considerations:
The Bent Chetler Mini sizes true to length. Size up for a heavier or more advanced kid who spends most days in soft snow, and drop a length for a skier still building confidence who wants quicker, easier turns.
