Ski Size

Skiers who can't decide between a carver and a freeride ski usually end up looking at something like the Mindbender 96. With a mid-90s waist and the updated Dark Matter construction, K2's all-mountain workhorse threads the needle between hardpack precision and soft-snow versatility. The whole Mindbender freeride line got a complete redesign this year, and the 96 sits at its heart.

Why we like it:

Of all the new 2027 Mindbenders, the 96 might be the one where Dark Matter Technology pays off the most. Placing weighted inserts at specific points near the tips and tails amplifies edge engagement on firm snow while the rest of the ski stays light and quick. It's a smart way to engineer carving precision into a ski that doesn't want to feel like a heavy carver.

Who it's for:

All-mountain skiers in the advanced-to-expert range who genuinely ski everywhere. Particularly suited to skiers who want one ski for the whole season rather than rotating between a carver and a freeride ski. Strong intermediates ready to push themselves can grow into it.

Highlights:

Shape and rocker have shifted noticeably from the outgoing Mindbender 96 Ti. There's more taper in the tip and a slightly more rockered profile, which gives the new ski a surfier, more forgiving character in soft snow. Underneath, K2's Aspen Paulownia core delivers a strong-to-weight ratio that's hard to beat in this category, and the Titanal I-Beam adds metal damping along the center of the ski. Dark Matter inserts on the 96 sit at Enhanced Stability Points along the edges in the tip and tail zones; this forward-and-back placement is what makes the 96 read more carve-oriented than the 101 or 111. A sintered base supports fast glide and predictable wax behavior.

Things to consider:

Anyone coming off the old Mindbender 96 Ti expecting an identical ski will be surprised. The new shape and softer-edged feel reads less aggressive at the top end, even if it's friendlier in the middle of the speed range. Hardcore frontside chargers may prefer the Mindbender 88, while anyone wanting more mass for absorbing chop should consider stepping up to the 101.

Fit & sizing considerations:

Standard sizing applies. Drop a length for crisper carves; bump up a length for stability in chop and soft snow.
